A&L Feed and Garden Supply has been in business for more than thirty years and strives to meet the needs of the community by providing excellent customer service and a balanced range of products.
Our staff members have areas of interest and knowledge in specific inventories to help you with selecting products to meet your needs.
Wendy-
Wendy entered a non-traditional woman owned business when she purchased A&L Feed and Garden Supply in 1975. Her background made for an easy fit. Wendy has a long interest in sustainable living. Raising goats, sheep, poultry and a large vegetable garden and an orchard were part of her everyday life. Having been there and done that, she now focuses on a young orchard planted with EZ-Pick fruit trees and a vegetable garden that will produce something edible all year long.
One of the more difficult aspects of being the owner of a small business is to employ the right people. Wendy strives to hire individuals who are knowledgeable and interested in customer service. Having an interest in customers’ needs helps direct the kind of inventory we stock. Take a look at our Links. Wendy and staff are interested in sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm so others can enjoy a more sustainable home site.
Ben-
Ben has been a presence at A&L since he married the boss 12 years ago. He fixes the computer, occasionally opens the store, closes out, fills in at the counter when absolutely necessary, and enjoys selling electric and conventional fencing- he has fenced miles and miles. From his home office, Ben is constantly monitoring and analyzing the business. Wendy respects and relies on Ben’s advice and help.
Brandon-
Brandon, A & L feed and Garden Supplys Manager came to A&L late spring of 2007. His back ground in technology has made him an especially valuable staff member. Brandon is the promoter of this web site and responsible for keeping it fresh and valuable for our visitors. Recently, Brandon achieved high marks for passing the required examinations to receive a valid pest control license from the State of California Department of Pesticide Regulation. This means A&L is licensed to sell pesticides to qualified applicators in California. The beekeeping department is also on Brandon’s list of responsibilities at A&L. He manages the inventory for this expanding and important department. Brandon tracks and orders the fence inventory which includes associated farm and ranch equipment for equestrians, goat, cattle and hobby farm owners. Brandon also enjoys researching and finding those hard to find products for our customers. If you have questionsyou can reach him at brandon@aandlfeed.com
Tom- Joining us in June 2005, Tom our Inventory Manager is also a poultry grower. He is enthusiastic about chickens from hatch to the stew pot. He enjoys making and sharing chicken vegetable soups. Tom is also responsible for ordering pet food and pet supplies which are a large part of our inventory. Tom has a keen memory for our customer’s needs and can usually remember your past pet food purchase. He knows the pet food product lines and can suggest an appropriate food for your pet that fits your finances. He enjoys reading and researching various farm and companion animals. Someday, Tom will own a farm.
Justin-
We were very happy to hire Justin in May 2008. He is only "slightly obsessed with raising poultry," be it ducks, turkeys, game birds, guinea hens. Justin is knowledgeable about various breeds and their specific needs. He looks after the feed barn and is directly involved in ordering hay and sacked feeds for our poultry, equine, swine and rabbit customers. Riding horses since he was three and a horse owner/trainer for years, he is comfortable talking about our equine feed. Justin was active in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) program during high school, and his steer took Reserve Champion at Redwood Acres. He has also raised swine and show rabbits, and can guide you on their care and feeding. Justin seems to particularly like critters with wings and enjoys raising pet birds.
Josh-
Josh joined A&L early spring of 2008. Last spring Josh tilled and planted his former pig pen to a vegetable garden. This year he says he is expanding the garden to the horse corral. Josh cares for and enjoys riding his horse. He was a member of the High School Rodeo Team and participated in the rough stock events. Josh was a member of FFA and enjoyed their activities. He can be found in the barn or in the plant nursery. He also tends the little A&L staff vegetable garden which was expanded this spring to include potatoes and squash. He would like to be a live stock deputy.
Kathleen- We first met Kathleen when she was the demo representative for Nutro Pet Foods. She regularly was at A&L handing out samples of pet food, treats and answering questions about dog and cat food. We were pleased when she accepted our job offer in May 2009. Not only is Kathleen knowledgeable about pet food, she has a great interest in backyard vegetable gardening and birding. Need help identifying those birds at the feeder, ask Kathleen. Kathleen is usually at the front counter where she is assists customers. She is the one who keeps the sales area organized, answers your questions and knows where everything is located. She takes much pleasure in photographing nature. See the screen saver on the store computer. Kathleen has four cats, a mouse and some fish. Someday she would like to own a graphics business.
Alice-
Alice has been part of A&L since early spring 2008. She came to us after a several week visit at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter. We don’t know much about her, other than she is very good at what she does- namely keeping the English Sparrows from pecking holes in the feed sacks and nesting in the rafters of the feed barn. She is also very interested in raising the stress level of any mouse who ventures into her territory. Alice unlike the other staff members is not friendly with customers. She will occasionally allow someone to pet her, but we don’t encourage that because she is easily annoyed. Justin is tolerated because he feeds her. Please ignore Alice, she won’t care, she already knows she is the "A&L Princess."
